About Gonzalo Arzuaga

Inspower is all about helping individuals achieve their dreams. How? By Inspire + Empower, sharing success online stories, and providing educational content.

Let me take you backstage Inspower.

About me, Gonzalo.

My name is Gonzalo, but you can call me Gonzo (if it’s easier for you to remember, and pronounce!) Once I tell people, “Gonzo, like the Muppet,” most of them couldn’t forget my name if they tried.

Where I’m From
I was born in the countryside of Argentina, 300 miles north of Buenos Aires. My father passed away when I was just 1-year-old and I had it rough growing up. My mom worked wonders just to make ends meet for my older brother Fernando and I.

How I Got Here
When I turned 18, I moved to Buenos Aires to study computer science. I soon realized that, although there was something magical about computers, my passion wasn’t the computers themselves, but what I could do with them.

I switched my major to Business. While at college, I got in touch with an amazing NGO called AIESEC. Thanks to them, I was able to live in Belgium for a year. Afterwards, I moved to Silicon Valley for an internship at Novell, a thriving software company at the time.

My First Taste Of Success
In 1995, I returned to Argentina and I finished my remaining 2 years of school in just 1 year. After graduating, I decided to do something, “on the internet,” which was still a new phenomenon in 1995. I created a search engine called GauchoNet which grew to become, “The Yahoo of Argentina.” Just 3 1/2 years later, my little bootstrapped project was acquired by Terra/Lycos. That was 1999, just a year before the dot-com bubble burst.
Followed By Failure
Sounds like perfect timing, right? A big exit right before things went sideways. Turns out that my good fortune didn’t last for long. Unaware of the coming crash, I reinvested nearly everything from the sale right back into the dot-com world. When the bubble burst, so did my internet incubator, and just 8 months after getting started, I had to shut it down.

But I Was Already Hooked
Despite that epic failure and the dot-com crash, I wasn’t ready to give up on the World Wide Web. I’ve since continued following my passion with Startups.com and KillerStartups. I can now say that regardless of the highs and lows, I’ve embraced the internet business for good.

The Written Word
Along with my passion for the internet, I also love reading books, especially the biographies and autobiographies of entrepreneurs. I’m happy reading pretty much anything related to the internet, business, and entrepreneurship as well, but I find the stories behind other people’s successes and failures to be the most engaging. If memory serves me right, I’ve read over 1,000 books in my lifetime. Yeah, I know, it’s a lot.

Yeah, I know, it’s a lot.

A Word Written
When you love reading as much as I do, a desire to write books often follows. And write I did. In my early 20’s I wrote my first book. It was about doing business on the internet and it was the first of its kind published in Latin America, in Spanish. It was published in 1996, which feels like centuries ago.

My first book sold well and I caught the writing bug. I went on to write a second book, about online marketing, which was published in 1997. I later wrote and published 3 more, one of which was co-written with my brother and business partner, Fernando.

Dynamic Progress
As much as I love books, I’ve realized that video seminars have quickly become the best way to learn and to share knowledge. I have, in turn, switched gears since those days of writing and publishing to embrace the dynamic medium of video seminars.

My Other Passions
I play chess, and pretty well I’d say. I play chess because I was taught how to play it when I was 6-years-old. Golf, on the other hand, is something I picked up later in life, and I really suck at it. Another great passion of mine is the NBA, and I’m a fan of fellow Argentinian, Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs.

Beyond reading and writing, I have a sincere love of languages. It is a personal goal of mine is to be an international speaker in 5 languages. So far, I’m pretty solid in English, Spanish and Portuguese. I still have a little way to go with my French and Chinese as both are a bit rusty.

I feel that the best place to learn a language is in a country where it is spoken. That belief has taken me on many journeys.

I went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 2 months to learn Portuguese. While there, I listened to the FM radio everyday on my 30-minute bus rides to and from my intense daily lessons with a private teacher.

Coincidentally, when I moved to Shanghai, China in 2006 to study Mandarin, I had a Brazilian roommate named Henrique. Learning Chinese was a personal challenge to me – something completely different from what I had learned before. My friend, Diego told me, “It’s not impossible,” so I went to Shanghai for 1 year, and I did it!

The Birth of Inspower
It’s amazing how many times a simple word or two of encouragement can go such a long way. That’s where the “Inspire” part of Inspower came from. I deeply believe we all have a word, a quote, a fable, or a real success story that acts as a trigger to help us better ourselves. Something that makes us hunger for more, go that extra mile, and push ourselves further than we ever thought possible.

There’s a Chinese saying from Mao Tse-Tung that goes, “hao hao xue xi, tian tian xiang shang,” which basically means, “Every day study hard, aim higher.” Simple. Beautiful. Push your own limits a little bit, every day.

Why Inspower
I’m doing Inspower because I feel very deep inside my being that it’s my mission, my higher calling in life. I was born to do this. I’ve felt driven to do this since I was about 30 and I’m now 42-years-old (in 2013). Finally, I’ve been able to stop procrastinating and follow this passion.

My ultimate goal is to reach 1,000,000 people on this planet with Inspower. I figure that I have about 30 more years to do so, (or hopefully 40 or even 50 more). Although 30 years may seem like a long time, reaching a million people is a huge goal and it’s time for me to get busy.

I’m not talking about a million visitors to the Inspower website. No. I’m interested in more than visitors. I want to actually reach a million people in real, life-changing ways. I want Inspower to help a million people to start trusting themselves. I want it to help inspire people to leave the desks and jobs they’ve hated and felt chained to for so long. I want to help people pursue their passions.

Despite popular belief, the universe is a generous and bountiful place. And because of the generosity and bounty of the universe, you CAN live well doing what you love.

Do you already know what your mission is? Maybe you have an idea about what you want to do, or perhaps you only know what you DON’T want to do. That’s ok too. If you’re not sure what your mission is, you can start with something like, “I don’t wanna be stuck in an office every day, working my butt off for someone else.” That’ll do.

My goal for Inspower is to help individuals achieve their dreams through online educational programs.

There, I said it. It’s out there and I’m not taking it back. It’s incredible how liberating it can be to voice your intentions and to specify your goals.

How To Inspower
How can I help other people achieve their dreams? Well, I love working at home, but I don’t want to work when someone else tells me to. I wanna work when I feel like it. I wanna work when I’m in “the zone,” and when I feel sharp and connected with the energy of the universe.

Sounds like a fantasy, right? Well, I’m already making it happen in my life, and if I can do it, you can do it.

So tell me, what’s your dream? What’s your passion? Let me help you. Let me walk down this path with you.

Do you dare to go for it?
