It can be so hard to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Often, we end up judging people because we do not understand their situation. Those that have special needs kids know this all too well.
I have friends with an autistic child, and I know that they have struggled for many years with stares, whispers and outright rudeness. That is why this news story was such a blessing to me. Someone saw this family struggling with their special needs child and decided to love on them instead of scorn them.
Families that have a special needs member need extra patience from the world around them. It is not an easy task to raise a child that breaks the norms.
There certainly isn’t a handbook to parenting, especially when it comes to a child that requires additional care. That is why I think it is so important that we all take the time to reassure a family that is obviously struggling.
